Quantitative Precipitate Classification and Grain Boundary Property Control in Co/Ni-Base Superalloys

Abstract A correlative approach is employed to simultaneously assess structure and chemistry of (carbide boride) precipitates in a set novel Co/Ni-base superalloys. Structure derived from electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) with pattern template matching, obtained energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). It found that the principal carbide these alloys Mo W rich M 6 C structure. An 2 B boride also exhibiting segregation observed at levels above approximately 0.085 at. pct. These phases are challenging distinguish an SEM chemical information (EDS or Z-contrast) alone, without structural provided by EBSD. Only fingerprinting necessary sufficient fully define phase. The identified dissimilar those predicted using ThermoCalc. We additionally perform assessment grain boundary serratability alloys, observe significant amplitude only absence pinning intergranular precipitates.
